The Knole sofa design is more than 400 years old! But with the right fabric (or
even leather) and by choosing the right style cushions it can be made modern or
classic to suit your desired taste or requirements.

The original Knole fabric sofa is a real classic but with small changes to things like fabric, choice of cushions, legs and arm style, you get a fresh sofa with a modern or classic look. From country homes to modern apartments, the Knole sofa will give your interior a unique style.
The history: The name Knole comes from Knole castle (also known as Knole house). It is located in  Sevenoaks, Kent. 11 miles north of Royal Tunbridge Wells, on the A26-A225. The site is now owned by The National Trust and opens Wednesday to Sunday from 17th March to 12th October, 12:00noon to 4:00pm. The house was built in the 12th century, but the sofa was created in the early 1600’s. In the past the function of the removable arm was to exclude draft or when lowered, act as a chaise.

Although our heating systems are much improved now, it’s quite comforting to relax on a sofa which cocoons you and protects you from draughts etc. Especially one whose arm may be lowered to form a comfortable bed or chaise. And in this age of watching our energy consumption and carbon footprint, having a sofa that reduces our heating bill can only be good.
The manufacturing:
Hopefully we should not even need to mention it, but just like all of our classic furniture the Knole is entirely handmade in England by Master Craftsmen with decades of experience in high quality furniture manufacturing, using traditional materials and methods.

Every piece is made to order and double checked to make sure that your furniture serves you for years to come.

We use only the highest quality solid beech hardwood frames and all our furniture joints are dowelled and glued. Stress points are also screwed to ensure durability. The seat platforms are steel sprung or webbed with high-tension webbing. The cushions are filled with either memory foam or reflex fibre, although other options such as feather are also available according to your personal needs and for optimum comfort.

Covering materials: All our furniture can be covered in Fabric or Leather or Faux Leather for Vegetarians. You can browse our gallery of fabric and leather for inspiration. We’ve listed the best and suggested covering materials which you can access using the dropdown.
Please note that you may also supply your own material.

Bespoke services: We offer a fully bespoke service as all of our furniture is handmade. You have complete freedom in choosing the sizes and style of your sofa. Our standard sizes can be seen below.

Please feel free to send us information of your specific requirements. Once we receive these, we’ll be able to advise you on the best solution using the Knole sofa whereby you’ll be able to adjust or change the arms, seats and even use fabric and leather combinations. In fact our term “Design Your Own Sofa” means exactly that. So please go ahead, email us your requirement and we’ll do the rest. We’ll even send you a sketch if you prefer but don’t forget to request one!
