How to Clean my Fabric Sofa?

No matter how clean you keep your furniture throughout the years, your couches are still bound to get dirty.  While many of us are very careful, accidents still occur and the sooner you clean them, the better your chance is of keeping your sofa stain free.  Even if there aren’t any stains or accidents, it is still recommended to periodically clean your fabric sofa to keep it fresh and looking new.  Instead of paying to have your sofa cleaned, there are other alternatives.

Here are a few simple things to keep in mind when cleaning your fabric sofas at home:

What NOT to do:

Never, under any circumstances, use bleach.  Some people assume that their fabric sofa is white, making them wrongly assume that bleach will not be harmful.  While some sofas may appear white, they have some distinct shade to them like “off white” or “egg white,” never just white.  For this reason, bleach will completely drain your sofa of any color it had and whether you do it on just one spot or your entire sofa, it will be noticeable and it will ruin the appearance of your sofa.   As for couches that have any other color to them, bleach will completely diminish it.  In addition to bleach, you should be aware of your furnitures warranty policy.  If your warranty is not up yet, do not clean it because adding cleaning solutions to it will void your policy.

Simple is better:

Sometimes less really can be more.  Try to shy away from expensive products and try something simple and effective like OxiClean.  While it’s noted that OxiClean is for clothing only, it’s really not.  It has proven to be effective with cleaning sofas as well because it is made specifically to clean fabric.  So why not a fabric sofa?  For cleaning fabric sofas, the OxiClean Max Force Laundry Stain Remover Spray is your best option.  It diminishes food stains, dissolves grease and oil, gets rid of dirt, and targets stains to remove them.  This product is safe and will not damage your furniture but should be tested before using.  The test that is recommended is called a spot test.

Spot testing:

Spot testing is a recommended test that should be done before cleaning your fabric sofa with any new product.  First, apply the product to an area of the sofa that is not seen, like the back of the skirting where the sofa comes together.  Then, don’t use the product until twenty four hours have passed.  Once a day has gone by, check the area that you applied the product and see if anything is different with the fabric.  If you see any damage done, do not proceed to use the product on the rest of your sofa because the same reaction will occur.  If all is well, the product is safe and will not harm your furniture.

More Alternatives:

Another efficient way to clean your fabric sofa is easier than you’d think and does not require buying any products that you don’t already have at home.  First, get a cup of laundry detergent or lye soap, then add a gallon of water and 1/4th cup of bleach.  However, be very careful to not put more than 1/4th cup of bleach because it can ruin your sofa.  If you use lye soap, you don’t need to add any bleach at all.  Mix the contents really well and use a soft brush to brush and clean the fabric.  Clean any excess liquid with either a shop vacuum or even a towel that will capture the moisture.   Once you have completed those steps, you repeat with just water and then allow your sofa to air dry.

More Options:

Another way to go about doing this is to dilute biological washing powder in hot water.  You can use a soft brush or towel and scrub your fabric, however be careful not to soak it.  Once you’re finished, repeat the steps with just plain water and allow your sofa to air dry.  Another helpful step you can add is vacuuming the surface of your sofa to maintain it and trap excess dirt, pet hairs, or anything else that’s unwanted and can be resting on your sofa.

Conclusion:

Whichever way you choose to go about cleaning your fabric sofa, follow the instructions carefully to avoid causing any damage to your furniture.  And remember, maintenance is very important.  By periodically vacuuming and cleaning your fabric sofa, you save yourself less work to do when it comes time to clean it.

How to clean my Leather Sofa?

Sofas are something we spend a lot of time shopping around for. We want something comfortable and great-looking. However, they sure do take a lot of beating over the years. If you were to look under your couch cushions, you’d probably find all sorts of crumbs and dirt that’s fallen between the cracks. Yep, those coins and socks aren’t the only things hiding in your sofa. We spend a lot of time on our sofas, which means we’ve had to learn many ways to keep our sofas clean. Sofas probably battle more types of stains than many other fabrics.

But what about a leather sofa? Leather is a special material and indeed, it requires special cleaning techniques. If you want to keep your leather sofa looking shiny and new, here are the basics on leather cleaning and maintenance.

First off, there are different types of leather and different types of stains. So there isn’t necessarily one major piece of advice that can solve every problem. Still, there are some general tips and suggestions that seem to work for most leather sofa owners who’ve battled tough-to-remove stains. And that’s what we’ll talk about in this article. Some ideas might seem obvious, while others may be a bit surprising. But all of these may not be okay to experiment with, as it’s difficult to find one product that is totally leather sofa-approved. So exercise caution.

Still, we don’t want to generalize too much. Finished leather and unfinished leather are very different things. Your sofa is probably finished, which means there are some basic ways you can clean it. To get rid of most grime, all you’ll need is a slightly damp, soft rag and some soap (but not anything too coarse). Gently rub the soap into the leather and then wipe it dry with a clean cloth. After the sofa has dried, you can invest in a deep conditioning formula to work into the leather; it can be easily found at the store.

Overall, you really do take a lot of risks when you try to clean leather. The wrong product can change the color of your sofa! A good idea is to test your cleaning supplies on a part of the sofa that no one will ever see. Wait to watch what unfolds before you apply it to the target stain.

Now, what kind of stain are you dealing with? Different stains will require different approaches. Let’s go down the list of the most common ones.

  • Ink stains are some of the most frustrating ones out there but often simply spraying it with hairspray and wiping it clean can do the trick. You might have to get some professional help, however, if this doesn’t work.
  • Water stains often plague leather sofas for the reason that it is used to clean it! This is why it’s so important to only use damp, not soaking, cloths when trying to remove stains. Water should dry naturally on the leather and then be met with a leather conditioner after it’s dried.
  • What about grease? Like with most stains, you’ll want to have a clean cloth on hand to gently blot the grease. Talcum powder and corn starch are said to work to fight grease in particular. Don’t rub it into the grease, however. Instead let it sit on top of it for a good four hours. Then you can wipe it away. Your leather sofa should be grease-free with his method.
  • Do you have a pet dog or cat that hangs around inside? Well, if so, then you’ll probably eventually smell some urine and reluctantly trace the scent to your leather sofa. Fortunately all you need is a clean, damp cloth to take care of the urine. Again, let the area dry on its own, naturally. This same method works for blood stains too. This is because both blood and urine contain protein and thus can be dealt with in a similar fashion.

It’s good to be protective and watchful over your leather sofa but there’s no need to panic if your child spills diet coke all over it. Just abide by these cleaning tips and you’re sure to keep your couch in good condition and looking as beautiful as ever. Always remember, though, that leather is one of the more unique materials out there and it can only handle a very narrow list of cleaning solutions and products. So while you want to get to a stain right away, you don’t want to get to it with the wrong product.

Knole Sofa

A Knole Sofa is not just a piece of furniture; it is a classy work of art.  From their history, fabric, style and construction, you can see they have an excellent pedigree and are a significant mark of quality in the world of furniture.  These impressive, practical furniture pieces can be purchased bespoke, brand new, second hand, or as period antiques through specialists or at auction houses.

No one knows exactly when the very first Knole sofa was made.  However, we know that the most famous example originates from about 350 years ago in 17th Century England, in the county of Kent.  It is there that a sofa of high quality, using the finest English traditional upholstering was created for Knole House; a stately home (the ancestral seat of the Sackville family) in Sevenoaks, from where the sofa takes its name.  Occasionally referred to as ‘the Knole Settee’, some believe that it was the early prototype of the first Knole sofa.  Whatever the truth, experts agree that the Knole sofa that still sits in Knole House is a fine example of the superiority and sophistication of this style of sofa.

Knole sofas still exude the style, class and quality that continue to make them popular today. Knole sofas can be made to measure and covered in any fabric or leather.  Due to the custom nature of so many Knole sofas, they can be made to any size.  At first glance, the Knole sofa doesn’t appear to be the most comfortable piece of furniture created.  With high sides, tall upright back and drop down arms tied by elaborately braiding, it looks rather unusual, but its solid beech frame and wide seats made of Irish duck feather offer unsurpassed space and comfort.

The drop-down arms are a fascinating feature of this excellent example of finest quality furniture.  When fully dropped down, they allow the sofa to be used as a bed.  When fully raised, they keep out the cold, creating a very snug and cosy place to nestle for the evening. In the days before central heating, this was a Godsend for a chilly night.  These days, it may keep the heating bills down!

Historically, it is believed that the high arms were intended to prevent curious servants from spying on what the lady of the house might be doing whilst her husband was away on business!  Whether this is historical fact, or fiction – it makes a great story to tell your visitors as they admire your very own Knole.

A bespoke handmade Knole is not a budget purchase.  It can cost anything up to £5000, but it is a piece of furniture that will last several lifetimes.  It is possible to purchase a pre-made Knole for less, but you will lose the exclusivity of a truly idiosyncratic sofa.  Nevertheless, that shouldn’t prevent you from looking for a great Knole for less; there are lots of places to purchase a beautiful two or three seater Knole for less than £2000.

Money Spent v Quality

That a sofa looks good and (or) is cheap doesn’t necessarily mean it  will give you a good return on money spent. Apart from needing to replace it quicker, a badly constructed sofa may be bad for your health. This is particularly true for people prone to bad backs.

It’s important to check:

  • The workmanship and how the sofa is constructed. You don’t have much say in mass produced sofas whilst bespoke and handmade can be specific to your needs.
  • Internal components and cushion fillers used
  • Quality of the upholstery. Your sofa must look and sit good. Is there enough padding? Check that patterns match the cushions and skirt, that stripes aligned at the edges.
  • Warranty period offered.
